Reasons to seek therapy:

When life's challenges become barriers to our effectiveness at home and/or work, we need assistance to transform our experience, heal ourselves and our relationships, and move on.

Some of these barriers include:

  • a diagnosis of cancer or other life threatening health conditions
  • an accident that changes the course of life
  • losses that break your spirit
  • stress that has grown out-of-control
  • torn relationships in need of repair
  • stagnation or burnout that affects the ability to be effective at work or home
  • depletion of spirit that strips sense of self and the creative energy required to manage life's complexities

Overcome mind chatter:

Creative forms of expression provide us with the ability to see positive possibilities. aHeARTT's creative methods, combined with traditional therapeutic approaches, inspire individuals and families with insight to the past and ideas for the future.  We work as partners to set goals for growth and healing.

The use of creative expression in therapy:

Creative expression may at first seem uncomfortable, but it soon proves itself as a non-threatening way to turn life challenges inside out.  It allows us to see problems or issues from a new perspective, and opens our hearts and minds to our own wisdom and insight.

Appointments:

Appointment times are available Tuesday and Thursdays from 10:00 to 6:00pm, Fridays from 8am—noon and one Saturday per month.  Other times may be available upon request.

Therapy sessions are held in the privacy of your own home. Dr. Hovey sees clients primarily in the NE metro area. There may be an additional travel fee depending on location.

Call 651-470-4671 to make an appointment.

Rates & Insurance:

I am in private practice and accept direct pay only (cash, checks, paypal).  My rates are affordable in order to save on the expense of billing insurance companies and in order to maintain the privacy of my clients.  With insurance companies a diagnosis must be recorded and as many as nine people may view your private records.  Furthermore marital and relationship counseling are typically not covered by insurance.  Direct pay avoids these barriers.

Stacking Life in a Better Load

Stacked rocksTaking on too much to do has become part of daily life – even for young children.  We tend to get so caught up in juggling our loads that that we forget to step back and take a look at the load we carry.  Creative expression helps us to step back and view our load from a new perspective. For example, take a look at the photo of the stacked rocks.  You might laugh or you might shake your head at the absurdity of trying to do such a thing.  Now, think about what will matter the most in ten years from now. How much of your life is devoted to that which will matter the most?  More often than not this will get assigned to a little rock.  The daily "this, that and the other thing" often become the big rocks on which we balance life.  When you look at the rocks as a representation of how you are stacking the various aspects of your life, this is one way of starting to stack life in a better load.   Another creative approach is to use poetry as well as other forms of creative expression. Consider the following poem The Armful by Robert Frost.

The Armful
For every parcel I stoop down to seize,
I lose some other off my arms and knees,
And the whole pile is slipping, bottles, buns,
Extremes too hard to comprehend at once
Yet nothing I should care to leave behind.
With all I have to hold with, hand and mind
And heart, if need be, I will do my best
To keep their building balanced at my breast.
I crouch down to prevent them as they fall;
Then sit down in the middle of them all.
I had to drop the armful in the road
And try to stack them in a better load.
– Robert Frost

After reading this poem, read it again while considering the things you pile one on top of the other, the things you hate to leave behind and when you simply need to sit down in the middle of them all.

The skill of the therapist is in being able to select creative ways to address your situation that have the potential to build understanding and healing.

Clients need only be willing to see and then act on the possibilities for change or growth that may unfold.  Creative skills are not required although they may be part of what unfolds.
